Visit USA Washington and Virginia
17th November 2018 - 10:20am
Jacinta Mc Glynn (Senior Reporter Travelbiz) reports from the VISIT USA Fam to Washington and Virginia.
Our last night in the country’s capital, Washington, is courtesy of Capital Region USA and Tony Lane (Chief Executive Visit USA Ireland) leads us to Georgetown, a quirky neighbourhood where students and cool people hang out. Our raison d’etre! A funky night of bowling and platters of pizza in Pinstripes and we finally retire to Kimpton Carlyle Dupont Circle (with the best beds in the world) and a presentation by Christina McAree of Kimpton Hotels advising all the brilliant boutique properties in the network. Later, it was mentioned that a few retired to an Irish bar close by. The rumour is, however, completely unfounded.
The State of Virginia and Loudoun County was next and with the tune of Shenendoah strumming in my ears, we repaired to rolling hills and horsey country. With vineyards, charming cideries and quintessential American towns, we had lunch and cider tasting in Mt Defiance Cider Barn in Middleburgh. Ciderlicious! The Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum was extraordinary and we got up close and personal with a Concorde, a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, Enola Gay (remember Hiroshima?) and Space Shuttle Discovery. A Maz Zing! Visit USA – I really mean it!
