Travelbiz Features Editor Declan Mescall reflects on his travels during his career, “My fridge needs more magnets and my blood definitely needs a transfusion of travel to get my heart beating again to its usual rhythm”.

The dictionary says travel means to go from one place to another. During these pandemic times my travel consists mainly of not travelling, except to go for my daily run in the Phoenix Park within my 5km radius which is the highlight of my otherwise confinement to home for the past 12 months. At that time last year, I was due to travel on assignment for Travelbiz to South Africa on a wonderful 10 day Fam trip with a group of Irish travel agents as a guest of South African Tourism. As they say, the rest is history.

During this time, apart from missing the company of family and friends I especially miss travel. I believe travel is in my blood. I think my blood has a fifth ingredient in addition to plasma, red & white blood cells and platelets. It’s called travel. Because that vital ingredient is missing my heart is not beating to its usual rhythm.

I have lived a very fortunate life and travel has played a pivotal role throughout my years. At 16 years of age my loving parents gave me the incredible opportunity to spend three months in Canada with my uncle, my Dad’s brother, my aunt and two cousins. I was their first ever visitor from Ireland since they had emigrated some 20 years previously and they treated me royally. That summer they drove me around much of Ontario and Quebec and gave me a wonderful appreciation of foreign lands. I loved every minute of it and so began my lifelong love affair with travel. (At that time the furthest my parents had travelled was from Dublin to County Clare where my Dad was from).

During my career I usually travelled abroad about ten or twelve times every year and holidays were always spent overseas. A very lucky guy for sure.

When sitting down to write this piece I calculated I have travelled to over 75 countries on personal, business and travel writing trips. I have travelled multiple times to numerous countries such as Canada, where I have made over 20 trips to revisit my now late uncle and aunt and also my younger sister and her family who have lived there for many years.

Because of my role as a travel writer, I am often asked where my favourite place is. I usually answer wherever I happen to be is my favourite place as I always try to enjoy it as much as possible when I am there. It’s in line with my life motto “Carpe Diem (seize the day)”.

Well, I reckon I have spent more than enough time in lockdown at home now and hopefully it’ll soon be time to travel again to enjoy far-off lands.

My fridge needs more magnets and my blood definitely needs a transfusion of travel to get my heart beating again to its usual rhythm.

First and foremost, I need to be vaccinated, then, have passport - will travel. Bring it on please.
