TUI Discovery Med Cruise Fam...Arrives in Malaga and Cadiz
12th October 2017 - 5:00pm
Jacinta Mc Glynn (Senior Reporter Travelbiz) is all aboard the TUI Discovery 2 Cruise Ship courtesy of Falcon / Thomson, hosted by group leader, Martina Dowling. After a (very!) early start, we fly Aer Lingus to Malaga and pick up our floating home in Malaga port. Ship ahoy! A very efficient check-in system allocates our spacious and well designed cabins and we’re off on deck to explore. Lunch in ‘Islands’ restaurant is buffet style with endless choice and variety; then we meet with Harlequin, Head of Entertainment, for a ship’s tour. The on-board facilities are amazing from the lively swimming pool area with great entertainment to lounges, bars, shopping mall, climbing wall, pitch and putt and adult only swimming pool. An indoor pool, spa and gym are also available and, of course, several restaurants.
We choose to dine between two restaurants for our 1st evening: Surf n Turf or Kora La – steaks and lobster in the former and Asian specialities in the latter. Reports from both were glowing. The traditional ‘Sail Away’ party on Deck 9 was attended by all but some hardy sailors had the stamina to actually remain until the wee hours. Perhaps they stayed to swab the decks. Others sensibly dropped anchor earlier!
Overnight we sail to Cadiz and a morning tour of the city saw everyone fall in love with this delightful and compact place. Situated on an isthmus, Cadiz is almost an island and, with huge maritime history, the architecture and narrow, meandering streets are full of atmosphere and redolent with lore and legend. Churches, bell towers, convents, botanical gardens, merchant houses, local squares, inner courtyards and mayoral palaces are in profusion and the city has a few lovely beaches and a thriving port. Dominated perhaps by Malaga and Sevilla, the city of Cadiz can nonetheless hold its head high in Andalucia and is an utterly charming city.
We’re off to Gibraltar tonight, so there could be a bit of apeing around on the Rock tomorrow! Be sure to check in for all the monkey business!
