Sara Rivero (Media Manager Spanish Tourist Office Dublin) brings us on an amazing tour of the Rioja wine region where we spent our first day and evening in Hotel Palacio Tondon and visited the village of Cuzcurrita to see Hotel Teatrisso, a delightful throw back from another era. La Rioja (just down the road from the Basque Country) has scenery that rivals descriptions from a fairy tale with crenelated castles the colour of ochre and old gold, emerald green hills and vineyards that creep their tendrils in army-like rows.

The region of Rioja Alta shaped our day of sipping today when we toured Estacion de Haro and tasted wonderful wines from Cune; met the Mayor of Haro and admired the delightful Wine & Soul Suites. Next up the Monastery de la Piedad (housing cloistered nuns!) was introduced to us by the Mayor of Casalarreina, then lunch in La Vieja Bodega. The internationally acclaimed museum of wine (Museo de la Cultura de Vino) at Vivanco was fascinating with an outstanding archaeological collection to reveal the history of wine. More tasting. Naturally (research, of course). Onwards to Bodegas Lecea in the village of San Ascensio. Estella, the owner’s daughter proudly showcased the family business, maintaining traditional wine making for 6 generations, even grape stomping. Shame we’re missing the harvest… Finally, we walk through the famous Calle de Laurel in Logrono to feast on tapas, pintxos and, you guessed it, more Rioja! Viva Espana!
