Falcon/Thomson FAM - Our Home for the Holiday - The Hotel Orquidea, Bahia Feliz
8th August 2017 - 5:00pm
Arriving at the Orquidea Hotel, we were greeted by an army of reps handing out very welcome glasses of Cava. It certainly helps calm the nerves as you grip restless kids by the hand while balancing a tower of luggage. It also helps distract from the bar (& cocktail menu) in sight and the wafting aroma of the restaurant close by while waiting to check in. The warm and friendly reception staff made check-in quick and effortless. We finished our drinks, got the keys to the room and headed for the lifts. The rooms are generous and newly refurbished with a split level layout. On the higher level, there are twin beds and modern bathroom (walk-in shower) on the higher level with 3 steps down to a lounge area with an L-shaped couch that converts to two single beds (cots are also available).
Off the lounge is the balcony (with almost all rooms having a sea view) overlooking the gardens and pools with the sea beyond. The room comfortably sleeps four, is fitted with flat screen TV and refrigerator. Wifi is free and works on multiple devices in the room and around the complex (great signal, even Netflix worked on the balcony, in the bars, by the pool and in the restaurants). If you upgrade to the superior room, you will get a PlayStation 4 set up and ready to go.
Beside the main hotel, there are two large swimming pools and a kid’s splash pool with mini water slides and a large bucket which tipped over every 10 minutes which provided endless joy to my 4 and 2 year old (somehow they thought I’d forget where not to stand to get a soaking - the things you do as a parent!). A lifeguard is on duty and there are ample sun loungers surrounding the pools and pool towels are complimentary. Beside the pool is the main stage and poolside snack bar - Fata Morgana (open 10am to 6pm). This is open from 10am serving breakfast (fruit counter, yoghurts/muesli & cereal station, meats/cheeses, salad bar, breads (incl. Gluten free selection) and the bar serving drinks (non-alcoholic is self-serve). Lunchtime offers an expanded menu including burgers/pizzas etc. to eat there or bring back to the sun loungers.
Spa and health centre has a laned pool and large hydro Thalasso pool. There is also an adults-only sun lounger area for those who wish to escape the families at the main pool area. A well-equipped gym is open 8 to 8 daily and there are numerous sports pitches (tennis/basketball/mini soccer etc.). The spa offers a broad range of treatments at reasonable prices (with all-inclusive guests offered a 20% discount while we were there).
