A select group of Irish travel trade accompanied by Declan Mescall (Features Editor Travelbiz) were among the first in Europe to enjoy the thrills, entertainment, dining, nightlife and more on board the world’s newest wonder, Royal Caribbean International’s Wonder of the Seas on a 2 night preview cruise out of Barcelona.

Our Wonderful hosts were Ben Bouldin (VP EMEA RCI), Jennifer Callister (Head of Sales) and Michelle Ryan (Regional Sales Manager). Wonder of the Seas, the fifth in the cruise line’s Oasis Class line-up, sets course for the Mediterranean on 7 night cruises from Barcelona and Rome to explore sought-after destinations such as Florence, Naples, and Capri, Italy:Provence, France; and Malaga, Spain. The adventures in store aboard Wonder span eight distinct neighbourhoods that are filled with exhilarating experiences, entertainment, restaurants, bars and lounges to enjoy day and night. The Central Park neighbourhood is adorned with more than 20,000 real plants. Fan favourites include the Flow Rider surf Simulator, rock-climbing walls, numerous outdoor pools, The Ultimate Abyss-the tallest slide at sea: the 10 story- high Zip Line and areas dedicated to kids -Adventure Ocean and teens-Social 100 and The Patio. The innovative Suite Neighbourhood is a ship within a ship and offers Royal Suite guests a private suite sun deck featuring a plunge pool, bar and exclusive restaurant.

Wonder of the Seas boasts excellent show stopping entertainment productions designed around four ‘stages: air, ice, water and theatre. From Olympic-level high divers and slackliners to champion ice skaters and live musicians, more than 100 performers and technicians, with cutting edge technology, come together to bring to life full-scale productions like inTENse - the ultimate AquaShow (my personal favourite), Ice Spectacular: 365-the four seasons of Planet Earth; Voices -a musical production and Tap Factory - an explosive high-octane acrobatics, music, dance and comedy spectacular. The Anchors Aweigh Parade is a high seas adventure with scalawags and swashbucklers when sailors of all types storm Royal Promenade with their fleets, flotillas and various vessels carrying shipmates past and present. A great spectacle.

There is an array of over 40 restaurants, bars and lounges throughout Wonder of the Seas offering an extensive choice of menus, including numerous speciality dining experiences with many providing live musical entertainment to suit all tastes.

Royal Caribbean International offer itineraries to 240 destinations in 61 countries on six continents and the big message Ben Bouldin and his senior management colleagues were keen to get across to the trade in Ireland during a media briefing session is that by the end of this month all vessels within their extensive fleet are back sailing the high seas. Cruising is back!
