“Oh to be chillin’ in Barbados again”.

The Travelbiz Team are getting ready to get back to what we do best. Travelbiz Features Editor Declan Mescall brings you a weekly snapshot of great Travelbiz memories.

Way back in September 2013 I was a guest of Virgin Atlantic Airways and Couples Resort Barbados on a wonderful weeklong visit to the beautiful and sunny Caribbean island of Barbados. On assignment for Travelbiz I was the only media representative and was accompanied by a great group of Irish travel agents.

One of the many high points of the trip was a Friday night visit to Oistins Fish Fry which is basically a huge outdoor street party with great food, art/craft gift stalls, restaurants, lively Caribbean music and dancing all combined with a fun and laidback atmosphere. It’s a 'must do' on any Barbados trip and is sure not to disappoint.

Oistins is the name of a fishing town on the south coast of the island and as you can guess from the name ‘Oistins Friday Night Fish Fry’, fish is the main item on every menu and Friday night is definitely the night to go. Your fresh fish is fried or grilled on the spot right in front of your eyes and the choice usually includes swordfish, tuna, mahi-mahi and flying fish. By 8pm it’s usually very buzzy and it goes on until late.

Earlier in the evening our group checked out some of the local watering holes and wandered into the Hercules Bar & Restaurant for a gander and of course a rum. As you know most photos on Fam trips are staged and everyone lines up and puts there best smile on. But this was not the case with this photo as everybody was just hanging out and chilling on the front porch. I reckoned it would make a great photo so I ran across the road to line up the shot without anyone knowing. Then I just called out and luckily everyone turned to face the camera. The group loved the photo so much they each gave me their phones to take the picture again for their albums.

Oh to be chillin’ in Barbados again.
