A never to be forgotten trip, thanks to Obeo Travel and Worldchoice, Namibia is a once in a lifetime experience. Qatar Airways flew us via Doha to Namibia’s capital, Windhoek. Located on Africa’s south west coast, Namibia gets its name from the oldest desert on earth, the Namib. This vast country was under South African rule and just gained its independence in 1990. Skirted by Botswana, Angola and South Africa and wave-bashed by the Atlantic Ocean (remember the Skeleton Coast?).

At Okonjima Nature Reserve, home to the wonderful AfriCat Foundation, renowned for helping injured predators and rehabilitating them in their natural habitat, we walk in the bush and spot leopard and crane our necks for giraffe. We actually walk with cheetah on our wildlife safari and, replete from her impala kill, we imagine her catapult into the chase with her aerodynamic body built for speed and agility.

The sky is like an old bruise, blushing pink and streaking yellow at the edges as we sip sundowners in the bush. Nature’s beautiful face is beyond humbling and flocks of yellow weaver birds add to the joy.

Etosha National Park is truly a pristine place where animals roam freely and super-knowledgeable guides passionately ensure the natural habitat is preserved. They love wildlife and determine to conserve this fragile space for posterity. At Etosha Mountain Lodge and at stunning Safarihoek, I learn that wealthy individuals invest in private game reserves for philanthropic reasons and genuinely care for the environment. Namibia hugely cares for conservation, so the planet in in good hands.

We visit another place of enchantment called Damaraland where locals use a unique clicking language and we meet the unique desert elephants. The Namib Desert threw up her wonders and secrets and we witness beauty without boundaries and lonely stretches of a thirsty land. Sossusvlei has some of the highest sand dunes in the world in shades of terracotta and ochre that cup the horizon with golden hummocks and sweep across this arid expanse like landmarks for the lonely traveller.  Sossusvlei is a force of nature, sculpted by sand as old as time and Deadvlei has a petrified forest.

Of many highlights, flying over the Salt Pan (as big as the Netherlands!) was amazing; watching kudu, elephant, antelope and dik dik at the drinking pool; skydiving with Ground Rush Adventures; visiting the township in Swakopmund; sitting under velvet skies spangled with silver stars and watching women of the Himba tribe selling jewellery.

Thank you to Team Obeo – Rannveig, Johann and David were outstanding hosts and super company. Seriously, Namibia is awesome in the most literal sense.
