Not quite starring Al Pacino, but top billing going to Himself in the ‘other” garden’. The ‘Don’ stole the show a while back, so no point competing. Move over Monty.

However, my own little patch gives pleasure and splashes of colour, enough to make the sky even bluer and sun brighter. Roses are in full bloom, although I have a twinge of guilt that “Generous Gardener” climbing rose is not pinned in and her faded blush-pink blooms are sadly drooping. Raspberry pink spiky spires of lupin attract the birdies who peck the seeds. I undertake fearless murderous swoops on greenfly where I’m convinced they’ve set up a crèche. I heard recently that all greenfly are born pregnant…… Mauve mops of chives and purple sage flowers are bee heaven and lavender fronds are a bee hotel. Verbena Bonariensis and Dierama together form a fluttering mass to fill the void left by elegant Aquilegia.

Crimson poppies pop up amidst the Campanula and the teeny mauvish-pink blossoms of Thalictrum are bravely pushing through the more robust Centaura and fine delicate stems of Nigella. Salvia, Astrantia and Weigela fill a few spaces, but I eagerly await the scarlet tips of Monarda. Japanese anemone are thuggish as they spread like wildfire and a personal favourite, Eryngium (sea holly) has intense ice-blue flowers and thorny leaves. Night-scented stock and jasmine are perfume heaven and Cyril the Squirrel still filches sunflower hearts.

The possibility of travelling abroad soon puts me in celebratory mood and I dream of scents of my favourite places: Spain and the aromas of gambas al ajillo then oleander at the side of the road; Portugal with lingering luscious smells of grilling sardines; Turkey has fragrance of hot bread and sizzling kebabs; Italy smells of proper pizza and fat juicy olives and Greece has stuffed tomatoes, feta and the heady scent of flowering jasmine. Those tantalising aromas are the true scent of summer. Bring them on!
