Frank Tully

Frank Tully

The many friends and colleagues in the travel industry of Frank Tully (Tully Travel) joined Joe Tully,  all of his family and friends in saying their goodbyes following Franks peaceful passing last week after a short illness. Like many of my industry colleagues, I have fond memories of calling in to see Frank and all the team in Carlow over the years, sharing a story or two in his office. I had the great pleasure of catching up with Frank not so long ago at a TIGS golf outing in Carlow golf club in his 93rd year. He made reference to my days on the road, referencing all the sales executives that frequently called to see him, including Tom Mulcahy, Simon Daly, Eugene Connolly and Pat Brady to name a few. Great memories indeed, and he will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of working with him over the years.

Frank was born in Dublin in February 1923. A native of Sandymount, he trained as a draftsman and in a very short period of time had over 100 construction workers reporting in to him where he specialised in shop fronts before acquiring land and developing housing schemes in Dublin’s Artane. Having met his lovely wife Patty in Dublin whilst working on a shop front project in Capel Street, Frank and Patty decided to move to Carlow and acquired a drapery store in 1948. That store subsequently became Tully Travel, trading as the first sole travel agency outside of Dublin and Cork. From installing the first telex machine in Carlow, following a visit to the first ever EXPO in Japan and a little help from the then post office and a little known gentleman named Charles Haughey, Frank went on to grow one of the most successful independent travel businesses in Ireland. Frank was also instrumental in the formation of the first country agents official association as president along with Con Neenan, which was to pave the way for the formation of the ITAA and its first president, Michael Walsh.

On behalf of all the Travelbiz team I would like to pass on our condolences to Joe Tully and his family, may Frank rest in peace.
