Last week, Travelbiz spoke with Martin MacKinnon (Sales Director - UK & Ireland Royal Caribbean International) for a quick catch-up now that he is almost a year in the new role. He tells us about holidaying in the Cotswolds, Arnold Schwarzenegger, his love of Travelbiz and what it's like to work with such a passionate team in RCI.


What was your first job?

My first proper job was as a Rover car salesperson in Wigan, while I was on a gap year before University. I got the sales bug and haven’t looked back!


What qualifications to do you have?

After doing my A-Levels, I went on to graduate with a degree in Business Studies – I certainly had a fun few years studying in Leeds.


To what do you attribute your success?

I try to be the best I can be every day, focus on big goals, support my team, and grab a bit of luck when it turns up. I am fortunate to currently work with a passionate and knowledgeable team, who are innovators in this industry – that also helps a lot!


How would you describe yourself to someone you have never met?

Focussed, competitive, open minded.


Who do you look up to in business?

I admire people who try to make a genuine difference to peoples’ lives. I am inspired by Bill Gates; not only did he build an iconic brand, but he also dedicates the majority of his time to helping people in poverty.


How do you get the best out of the people that work for you?

I try to understand people’s personal drivers and needs. I encourage people to prioritise their strengths. At Royal Caribbean, we have a team of highly-skilled and talented people; there are creative people, people who are problem-solvers, people who are good with numbers. For me, it is important to get to know everyone so we can play to each other’s strengths. I try to find the right balance between being involved and providing freedom.


What do you love most about your job?

Being relatively new to travel, I continue to be inspired by the passion of everyone in the industry. I really believe in the Royal Caribbean brand, which I think provides something truly unique to cruisers. It’s fantastic to be part of a brand that provides the ultimate holiday experience and creates precious memories.


What do you dislike most about your job?

It’s hard to dislike much about working for such an incredible brand – I wish I had more holidays so I could spend more time on our amazing ships.


What website or app could you not do without?

Definitely Amazon for ultimate convenience, and obviously TravelBiz so I can stay up-to-date on the Irish travel trade! Our agency partners are integral to effectively communicating to Irish holidaymakers how a Royal Caribbean holiday offers something for everyone.


What was the last book you read?

I recently read Arnold Schwarzenegger’s autobiography, which is an inspiring read. He started from humble beginnings but achieved remarkable success in three very separate careers (bodybuilding, acting and politics). His approach is essentially – set big goals, and back yourself to succeed.


What was the last holiday you were on?

We rented a lovely cottage in the Cotswolds. With a toddler in tow, it’s handy to be able to fill the car with her stuff for a short break and find a great spot not too far from where we live in London. Food, wine, and a chance to be outdoors.


Tell us something interesting about yourself.

Nobody can place my accent – it’s roughly 25% Scottish, 25% Lancashire, 25% Yorkshire, 25% other stuff!
