Ahead of the ITAA Awards in the Mansion House, John Booty and John Warr hosted a lunch for media and representatives from long-established partnerships including Catherine Grennell-Whyte (Finnair) and Lisa Rabbitte from Emirates.

John Warr spoke about the strong growth delivered from Irish sales, in no small part due to John Booty’s efforts.

Wendy Wu launched the Victoria Mekong (Vietnam) river cruise ship last September. It is their first owned ship and is a 4-star deluxe offering with 35 spacious cabins, averaging 25m sq, significantly larger than industry norms. Itineraries, consisting of 4 and 5-night cruises, are selling very well with some groups chartering the whole ship.

In response to the outbreak of the Coronavirus, John detailed the scale of Wendy Wu and how they own their ground handling company so services can be adapted to wherever is safest (for context, it is worth noting China is 134 times the size of Ireland). Furthermore, Wendy Wu offers extensive itineraries outside China.

Wendy Wu is now the largest escorted tour company for Japan and, at certain times of the year, sales to Japan are higher than those of China. The shortest route to Japan from Ireland is with Finnair via their super-efficient hub in Helsinki. Emirates is also proving a popular option with many customers stopping over in Dubai for a night or two.

Japan is particularly popular for the Irish tourist, with both Vietnam and Cambodia also strong markets showing 26% growth. Finally, in terms of Asia, the destination of Sri Lanka has returned to the market, having tentatively recovered following the bombings.

Elsewhere, 2000 and 2021 itineraries to South America are now all fully escorted.

Lastly, solo tours is a rapidly growing market segment with Wendy Wu offering two itineraries to China, two to Japan and one to India. Remember, no single supplements apply on solo tours.

John Warr ended his talk with praise for John Booty and all the work he has done for the company.
