During the time in Madeira, the Fam group enjoyed the local cuisine. Madeira boasts delicious fish and seafood dishes which are widely available including black scabbard, tuna steaks, limpets and shellfish. Other typical regional dishes include beef roasted on laurel wood skewers accompanied with fried corn. Certainly, Madeira has a fantastic range of high quality, good value restaurants located throughout the island.

On the first night, they dined in the Hostel Santa Marie located in the Old Town of Funchal. The following evening they walked from their hotel to the nearby Chalet Vicente Restaurant for dinner. On the final night, Declan and the group took a 45-minute drive to the unique Maktub Bar on the seafront of the city of Ponta do Sol. Perhaps the most unusual dining experience was at the Faja dos Padres waterside restaurant as the only access was by way of a very vertical cable car from the high cliff above.

The base for the 4-night stay in Madeira was the four-star modern and stylish hotel Alto Lido which is very centrally located in Funchal along a thoroughfare lined with cafes, bars and high-quality restaurants. The hotel boasts three on-site restaurants, both an outdoor and indoor heated pool together with a health and fitness spa, and sun terrace with free car parking on the premises is less than a 30-minute drive to the airport.
