Following his recent media trip to NYC, Declan Mescall (Features Editor Travelbiz) made a repeat visit to the Big Apple to experience the New Year in New York.   He travelled with Aer Lingus from Dublin to JFK and stayed at the Hotel Beacon.   ‘The Jewel of the Upper West Side’ is often used to describe the cosy boutique Hotel Beacon which is located on Broadway at 75th Street and very centrally located as it is only a half an hour’s walk, or one stop on the express subway, to Times Square.   Taking full advantage of the unseasonably mild crisp weather with blue skies and no rain or snow, Declan made good use of his Citypass to explore the city that never sleeps.   The NYC and Company website www.nycgo.com is packed with useful information and suggested places to visit.

Included in Declan’s action packed itinerary were visits to the National 9/11 Memorial Museum, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, the American Museum of Natural History (the Dublin museum it is known as the Dead Zoo!), Hop-on Hop-off bus tours of Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx, a walk on the unique High Line –an elevated landscaped park situated on a disused rail line, together with a brief trip to see the New Year Sales in full swing in Macy’s, Century 21 and Saks of 5th Avenue.   Surely the best way to experience a city is on foot and many hours each day were spent walking the skyscraper lined streets of NYC.   The Christmas decorations still festooned the city and iconic places like the Rockefeller Centre and Times Square were attracting large but comfortable crowds of sightseers.   On 5 of his 6 evenings in NYC he enjoyed a Broadway Show with half price tickets bought a few hours before the performance.
