Arrival at Athena Palace in Sithonia

The region of Halkidiki in northern Greece (Macedonia) comprises three long, narrow peninsulas. In fact, Halkidiki means three fingers. The group drove to the furthest point to Mt Athos which famously is home to many monasteries (one of which allows men-only to visit – did you ever!), all clinging to rock faces and grassy hillsides. Monasteries dedicated to St Paul, the Archangels Michael and Gabriel et al, Mt Athos is very special and a pilgrimage site for many.

Sunway hosted a classy cruise on the blue Aegean and it was as dreamy as it sounds. A day on the briny! Embarking at the village of Ouranoupolis, Jacinta spotted a few Orthodox Priests dockside and plenty of Greek icons for sale (and no, she doesn’t mean Eddie!). The group stayed in the lovely 5* Eagles Palace; then visited 4* Akrathos Beach for lunch, and headed to Sithonia Peninsula and Neos Marmaris village for a visit to 5* Anthemus Sea. Great Greek food along the way, stunning scenery and a bunch of terrific travel agents – what more could a body ask for?

C’mon now, don’t be rude, ya know what I mean! Halkidiki, the three fingers (of Poseidon) - the Fam explored all three peninsulas, Mt Athos, Sithonia and Kassandra. What a fantastic place. The landscape is greener than a grasshopper and filled with olive groves, lemon, lime and pomegranate trees. The group was treated to an amazing 5 course dinner (with accompanying local wines) in 5* Athena Pallas (Acrotels Group) where their special room was painted with murals on sandstone. A stunning venue. The group visited a number of great hotels along their Greek journey from 2 star gems to 3, 4 and 5 star diamonds with attitude. Sunway caters to all tastes and pockets in this Home for the Gods.

Jacinta & the group ended their Greek Odyssey in Kassandra peninsula near the resort of Kallithea at Theopano Imperial (a member of the GHotels). They wander the spectacularly pretty coastal village of Afitos, full of ancient houses and shops carved in local stone with hand painted plant boxes, before heading to Thessaloniki for the flight home to Dublin.  Halkidiki really is heaven, so visit soon to experience touches of real Greece. Northern Greece is not so commercialised and all the better for it. It’s still pristine and perfect with super beaches, traditional tavernas and typical local villages. Sunway can get you to this earthly paradise. It’s the only way to go and Sunway will give you the fingers!
