Falcon/Thomson FAM Truly Special, Speciality Dining
9th August 2017 - 1:35pm
Aside from the main restaurant, all-inclusive guests can avail of an a la carte meal in Taverna, a speciality restaurant overlooking the sea (book early with reception as availability books up fast). This is a beautiful, intimate little spot away from the hustle and bustle of the main restaurant and main stage area. With table service and wine included, the waitress explained the menu and the dishes. We enjoyed appetisers, a selection of tapas for starters - sizzling chorizo, Canary style salty potatoes with mojo sauces, a cheese & dip platter, dates wrapped in bacon and fresh prawns. With a choice of sea bass or fillet steak, both of us went for the latter. The girls picked from the children’s menu - one opted for chicken goujons and chips, and the other pasta with sauce.
There was one sitting so plenty of time to savour the food, the wine and the view. We relaxed watching the sky turn from blue to black. In the evenings, on a small stage beside this restaurant, a singer with a guitar, sitting alone on a high stool serenades the diners. We moved closer to finish the wine and enjoy the entertainment. The girls sat at a low table kitted out with paper and crayons, made new friends then danced together in the courtyard as parents watched on and relaxed in the night air. This is what holidays are all about.
El Sultan is Aladdin’s cave with booth seating covered in plush, cream cushions; decorated, arched ceilings and dark wooden tables. There is also plenty of seating outside on the veranda, lit by fairy lights, overlooking the gardens. The menu is a mix of tapas and international cuisine. This is not part of the all-inclusive offering though we dined there for a birthday celebration, went for a selection of tapas to start, rack of lamb with vegetables and creamy potatoes each as main; generous burgers, chips and salad for the children and two enormous clown ice creams for dessert. We had a litre of sparkling sangria with the meal and the cost came to just over €60. It is fantastic value for the quality of the food, the setting and service. If staying on an all-inclusive basis in the Orquidea, guests received a 25% discount!
An honourable mention to Thea’s Coffee shop located in neighbouring Tui Family Life - Playa Feliz (resorts share facilities). As an avid coffee lover, this little gem makes a mean cup of joe, the best on the island. While not included in “all-inclusive” a cappuccino or frappuccino is half the price of Dublin and tastes fantastic.
A word of warning, with such a choice of eating options whether meals or snacks (main restaurant, snack bar, neighbouring resort’s restaurant - all inclusive) or Taverna (1 meal included per stay), El Sultan or Thea’s Coffee Shop (not included), you will spend a vast amount of time eating.
