Don Shearer headed to Shannon Airport to speak with Declan Power (Shannon Airport). He toured the airport and witnessed the seamless transition to the new COVID-19 measures designed to protect customers and staff as scheduled passengers resume this week, from 1st July.

Speaking at the airport Don commented, “As a reassurance to the trade and your customers, it’s not as daunting as people make it out to be”, while Declan added, “if your customers are worried about social distancing, you can do it even better in Shannon and we are much easier and faster to get through”.

While open for essential services to facilitate cargo, repatriation and emergency flights during the COVID-19 crisis, scheduled passenger services were suspended. The airport is now implementing new measures to protect passengers and employees.

Ryanair recommenced 16 services from Shannon Airport from 1st July to: Alicante, Barcelona-Reus, Faro, Fuerteventura, Kaunas, Krakow, Lanzarote, London-Gatwick, London-Stansted, Malaga, Manchester, Palma, Tenerife, Warsaw, Wroclaw and Vienna.

Commenting on the new measures a spokesperson for Shannon Group said:  “Shannon Airport is a vital national strategic piece of infrastructure that plays an essential part in bringing business people, tourists and cargo to the region. The ability of this region to rebuild in the aftermath of this pandemic is reliant on having a strong airport and we are working to put measures in place to have airport passenger services up and running with health and safety our priority”.

New COVID-19 Health & Safety Measures at the Airport - in as much as is possible, new measures will involve a contactless journey through the airport with minimal touchpoints.

Over 4,000 pieces of COVID-19 signage are on route to the airport and inside the terminal building. Multiple sanitation stations are throughout the airport. Specialised COVID-19 deep cleaning processes have been introduced. Protective glass screens are at key customer-facing areas including at check-in, all customer service desks, security screening areas, retail and at boarding gates. Shannon Airport strongly recommends passengers bring and wear a face covering when inside the airport.

2m social distancing has been implemented with floor signage. Public seating has been reconfigured to reflect the 2m protocol. The airport’s Public Address System will incorporate social distancing reminders at regular intervals.

The measures reflect the national COVID-19 HSE guidelines and government code of practice guidelines for Air Passengers taking on board the best practice guidelines developed by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the ECDC.
