Croatia Airlines, the national carrier and member of Star Alliance, together with the Zagreb Tourist Board hosted seven Worldchoice travel agents and Travelbiz on a Fam trip to Croatia’s capital, Zagreb. The group were upgraded to Business Class and enjoyed Fast Track and the DAA lounge before boarding. Croatia Airlines is a full-service airline so a delicious, Croatian-inspired, hot meal was served (main course of sea bream) accompanied by wine, beer and soft drinks. During the short 2 hour 30 minute flight, cabin steward Igor offered lots of helpful information about what to see and do in Zagreb.

Irma Kennedy (Country Sales Manager UK&Irl Croatia Airlines) accompanied the group in Zagreb and explained, “This year Croatia Airlines is celebrating its 30th anniversary, has flown about 610,000 flights [with] over 40 million passengers and flies to 30 international destinations (in 24 countries) and 8 Croatian ones. The airline’s fleet consists of 12 aircraft”.

Currently, this airline operates twice-weekly flights from Dublin to Zagreb (Thurs & Sun at 10.45am until 26 January). Croatia Airlines will commence the Dublin Zagreb route again from 9th April offering thrice-weekly return flights (Tues, Thurs & Sun) with convenient daily connections to Dubrovnik, Pula, Split and Zadar. Also, the new airport opened in March 2017 and is c. 30 minutes from the city centre.

The Zagreb Tourist Board presented Zagreb is a Central European city with a Mediterranean flair.  Exploring Zagreb on foot is easy. Even wandering leads to discovering some of the city’s major attractions, all located close by. The city also boasts an excellent tram service - one of its trademark features that covers most of Zagreb and is particularly useful in the city centre.

There are around 4,500 cafes and restaurants in Zagreb, over 40 museums and more than 60 hotels (5 5-star). The group visited the Museum of Broken Relationships, declared the most innovative museum in 2011. Gas lamps were first introduced to Zagreb more than 150 years ago and 214 are still in use. A lamplighter lights them nightly and dims them in the morning.

Zagreb is a city of festivals, on throughout the year. The end of the year is marked by Advent - definitely something special in Zagreb. Zagreb has been voted Europe’s Best Christmas Market three years in a row 2016, 2017 & 2018. It’s easy to see why as the city is transformed into a winter wonderland which offers plenty of fun, a wealth of street-food options, Christmas lights and decorations, stalls selling handicrafts, trinkets and lots more. The markets are spread throughout the Lower and Upper Town and are very popular with local Croats as well as international visitors.

An Ice Park is set up on King Tomislav Square during Advent Zagreb which lasts until 7th January and this year the theme of the Christmas & New Year Markets is the Nutcracker.

The Group thoroughly enjoyed wandering around the city at this unique time in the company of their excellent guide Jelena Bulat.
