Why Tampere is the Nordics’ most underrated food city

Long defined by its industrial heritage and its iconic black sausage mustamakkara, Tampere is entering a new era. Recently named European Capital of Smart Tourism 2026, the Finnish city is now gaining recognition for something else: one of the Nordics’ most exciting emerging food scenes.

With its first Michelin-listed restaurant, a deep connection to nature and one of Finland’s most distinctive food festivals, Tampere’s culinary identity is evolving fast – and 2026 marks the moment to experience it.

Tampere’s MICHELIN Milestone

A major milestone came when Restaurant Kajo became the first restaurant from the Tampere region to be featured in the Michelin Guide.

Led by Veli-Matti Lampinen and Marko Simunaniemi, Kajo offers a single seasonal tasting menu, “Ode to Nature,”  built by close collaboration with local farmers and fishers, as well as their own foraged ingredients. The experience is cohesive and ingredient-led, reflecting the purity and restraint that define modern Finnish cuisine.

Art, Lakes, and Michelin-Level Cuisine: Mänttä Food Festival 2026

Easily reached in an hour by train from Tampere, the annual Mänttä Food Festival has become one of the country’s most distinctive gastronomic events.

Organised by Restaurant Gösta in partnership with Serlachius Museums, the festival pairs five artworks with five Nordic-inspired courses, each created by leading chefs and served within a museum setting. The experience can be extended with a pre-dinner sauna session at the award-winning Serlachius Art Sauna, including access to a hot tub and lake swimming.

Taking place on 5 September 2026, the event is already drawing international attention.

A culinary scene shaped by nature and renewal

What distinguishes Tampere is not trend-driven dining, but a food culture grounded in nature, sustainability and creative restraint. Chefs draw inspiration from forests, lakes and fields, working closely with farmers, fishers and foragers, while urban areas such as Hiedanranta, a former industrial zone now evolving into a hub for sustainable culture and dining, reflect the city’s broader transformation.

Hiedanranta is home to Restaurant Väst, where the signature,  inspired by the flavours and spirit of Finnish midsummer sets the tone for a seasonal, locally sourced menu. The restaurant’s bright Nordic interior and connection to the surrounding community make it a standout example of how this former industrial district is evolving into a hub for sustainable culture and innovative dining.

Forest feasts and singing chefs: Experiences you can only have in Tampere

Tampere offers culinary experiences that are as unique as its landscapes. In the surrounding forests, top local chefs transform seasonal, wild ingredients into full three-course fine dining meals cooked over open fires.

One of the most distinctive offerings is The Singing Chef Dinner, led by Emmi Latvanne in collaboration with chef Sami Hakamäki. This immersive experience pairs a surprise menu crafted from the finest seasonal ingredients with live classical singing, performed by Latvanne herself. Each course is inspired by the rhythms of nature, turning dinner into a multi-sensory journey.

Tampere’s culinary identity is evolving fast – respectful of tradition yet confidently looking forward. With Michelin recognition secured, landmark events selling out in advance, and a new generation of chefs pushing boundaries, Tampere is no longer just a food city to watch quietly. It’s one to visit in 2026.
