Tourism Awareness Week: Embracing ‘Tourism and Peace’ to Celebrate Jamaica’s Culture and Community

Jamaica will observe Tourism Awareness Week from 22nd to 28th September 2024, under the theme “Tourism and Peace: Out of Many, One Love.” The theme highlights the essential role of tourism in connecting communities and promoting unity and understanding across diverse cultures.

Unveiling of a New Mural by Sheldon Blake

One of the standout features of this year’s celebrations will be the unveiling of a stunning mural on Peters Lane, downtown Kingston, on 23rd September created by the acclaimed muralist Sheldon Blake. Known for his impactful murals in downtown Kingston, Blake’s work seeks to inspire change, foster harmony, and promote healing. His vibrant artistic style celebrates Jamaica’s rich culture, skilfully blending traditional and contemporary techniques to highlight the island’s history, music, and everyday life. Focusing on themes of empowerment and resilience, his artwork conveys messages that resonate deeply within communities. Actively engaged in both local and international projects, Blake is committed to preserving Jamaica’s roots through art, drawing inspiration from Marcus Garvey’s belief “A people without knowledge of their history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots.”

Engaging Activities Throughout the Week

Tourism Awareness Week will offer a variety of activities that allow both locals and visitors to immerse themselves in Jamaican culture:

Youth Forum – Scheduled for 25th September at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, the forum will engage students and tourism action club members in meaningful discussions about tourism’s role in fostering peace and unity.

Culinary showcase ‘Savour Jamaica’: On 26th September, the Artisan Village in Falmouth will host the ‘Savour Jamaica’ culinary event, celebrating the flavours of Jamaican cuisine.

The ‘One Love Concert’ – Culminating the week’s festivities, the ‘One Love Concert’ on World Tourism Day (27th September) at Devon House will feature performances by local artists. The concert will celebrate the role of tourism in promoting cultural exchange and community spirit, bringing together people from all walks of life.
