The Iconic Motown Museum Begins Final Phase of Major Expansion with New 40,000 Sq. Ft. Space

The legendary Motown Museum in Detroit, Michigan has embarked on the third and most transformative phase of its multi-year renovation project. Construction is now underway on a stunning two-level, 40,000 square-foot addition, scheduled to open in the summer of 2026.

This new structure will sit directly behind the renowned Hitsville U.S.A. house, the original Motown Records headquarters and the heart of the museum since its inception in 1985. The expansion is designed to enhance the museum’s offerings, paying homage to Motown’s storied past while paving the way for future generations to connect with the music and culture that shaped a generation.

Early renderings reveal a grand lobby featuring rich gold accents and striking images of iconic Motown legends such as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Diana Ross. This opulent design will set the tone for an immersive experience celebrating the sound that took Detroit—and the world—by storm.

When complete, the expanded facility will include a state-of-the-art theatre, generously sponsored by Ford, along with modern exhibit spaces showcasing new and enhanced interactive displays. Visitors will also enjoy a retail shop offering exclusive memorabilia, bringing the history of Motown to life in an entirely new way. There will also be a dining area called Miss Lillie’s Motown Café, in honour of Lillie Hart who was Hitsville’s cook and provided many meals for Motown artists.

With this major addition, the Motown Museum promises to be a must-visit destination for music lovers everywhere, preserving the timeless sound of Motown for future generations.

The first expansion phase consisted of Hitsville Next, a new educational and artist development that opened in 2021 and was created by connecting three houses next to main building. The second phase, which included a new plaza out front and restoration on the Hitsville house, was completed in 2022.
