Team Travel Centres win the inaugural Hablo Visit California Cup

Travelbiz are always up for a challenge and your Travelbiz reporter, Marian Benton, was more than happy to pick up the gauntlet and accept Dominic and Bernie Burke’s invitation to join the Travel Centres team for the inaugural Visit California Cup golf match in Scotland organised by Hablo. The Travel Centres Irish team of Nicola Burns (Discover Travel, Midleton), Michael Bowe (Bowe Travel, Thurles), and David Bernie, (Midland Travel, Tullamore) and yours truly, took on Scotland’s finest and came away victorious. Our non-playing captain, Dominic Burke accepted the Visit California Cup on behalf of Travel Centres.
The match took place in the most salubrious surroundings of magnificent Meldrum House Hotel and Golf Resort in the Aberdeenshire countryside. Organisers Hablo together with key sponsors Visit California, Barbados Tourism and Palm Springs entertained us royally. We enjoyed a delicious formal dinner on the first night before retiring to the 1236 Cave Bar for a nightcap and some musical entertainment provided by the very talented Ross McWhirter.
Day two was the serious business of the golf followed by a drinks reception in the unique Titan Sky Bar, a transparent dome to allow one to star gaze in comfort. We then had an opportunity to meet and mingle with local travel agents who attended a workshop with the sponsors and joined us for a barbecue afterwards. A big thank you to Hablo hosts Russell Meara, Greig White, George Beguinot and to sponsors Brendan Croft, Visit California, Stacey, Barbados Tourism and Gerry Boyle, Palm Springs for their gracious hospitality. We look forward to seeing them in Ireland next year for the return match – and to holding on to that beautiful trophy!
