Shannon Airport becomes a Gallery of Ireland’s Most Iconic News Moments

#Traveltradetogether

Press Photographers Ireland CLG Exhibition Opens at Shannon Airport.

In the lead up to World Photography Day 2025, which is dedicated to celebrating the power of images, The Shannon Airport Group is delighted to launch the Press Photographers Ireland CLG Exhibition, currently on display at the Airport for the next two weeks.

The AIB Press Photographer of the Year Awards honour the finest in Irish press photography.  This exhibition showcases all winning and shortlisted entries – over 100 captivating images that powerfully narrate Ireland’s story throughout 2024 across a variety of categories.

Welcoming the Exhibition, Niall Kearns, Airport Director at Shannon Airport said: “We are honoured to host this stunning showcase of Irish photojournalism. They say a picture paints a thousand words and that’s certainly true here, with 2024 coming vividly to life as you move among these images. Congratulations to all the award-winning photographers. I encourage everyone travelling through, or visiting Shannon Airport, to take the time to experience it.”

David Branigan, President of Press Photographers Ireland CLG, noted that: “The age of fake news, disinformation, AI generated and manipulated images is truly upon us. Still, the viewers of these award-winning images on display now at Shannon Airport, like all the work of the members of Press Photographers Ireland, can be assured that only human technical and creative skills have been deployed in telling their stories.”

The showcased categories include News, Daily Life & People, Sports Action, Arts & Entertainment and Politics among others. Notable regional talent includes Limerick photographers Brendan Gleeson and Keith Wiseman, awarded 2nd in News and 3rd in Public Relations respectively. Kerry photographer Domnick Walsh secured 2nd in Nature and the Environment and 3rd in Arts and Entertainment.

World renowned sports photographer James Crombie claimed his third AIB Press Photographer of the Year title this year. His powerful portfolio on display includes “Full Stretch” featuring Limerick hurler Kyle Hayes, “Tears of Joy”, capturing Katie Taylor’s emotional Olympic gold moment and his iconic, sensitively planned image for Pieta’s Darkness Into Light campaign.

The Press Photographers Ireland CLG Exhibition opened today and will run until 26th August at Shannon Airport as part of its regional tour. Located on the 1st floor of the Departures area, the exhibition is free to visit. Whether flying from Shannon or simply stopping by, visitors can also explore the airport’s Aviation Gallery, home to the world’s largest private collection of diecast model aircraft, visit the viewing gallery, and enjoy a coffee or treat at JJ Ruddles café, as well as immersing themselves in the captivating visual storytelling of this exhibition.
