Ryanair confirm third based aircraft in Cork

#TRAVELTRADETOGETHER

Cork Airport welcomes this week’s announcement by Ryanair, Europe’s No. 1 airline, of its intention to base a third aircraft at Cork in preparation for the commencement of the airline’s largest ever summer schedule. Today’s announcement brings to 25, the number of destinations that will be served by Ryanair this summer at Cork Airport.

In addition to the announcement of the basing of an additional aircraft, Ryanair also announced seven new routes from Cork Airport this summer: Pisa, Italy; Alghero, Sardinia; Valencia, Spain; Venice, Italy; Manchester, UK, Birmingham, UK and Edinburgh, UK.

Following Ryanair’s most recent new route announcement at Cork Airport in September last year, today’s announcement will see, further enhancement of the offering to passengers across the South of Ireland.

In welcoming the announcement, Niall MacCarthy (Managing Director Cork Airport) said: “I am delighted with today’s announcement by Ryanair that a third aircraft will be based at Cork Airport for the upcoming summer season. With the addition of seven new and exciting summer routes including Pisa, Alghero (Sardinia), and Valencia, this will bring the total number of Ryanair routes available from Cork Airport to 25, giving lots of travel options for our passengers and the largest choice of routes to date. In addition, the frequency on London Stansted is being increased to three times per day, seven days per week and Manchester will also operate twice daily”.

“Research tells us that there is huge pent-up demand for travel after the pandemic. People really appreciate good friendly customer service and uncrowded, pleasant indoor spaces which they will find at Cork Airport. It has been a long wait, but we know that the travelling public across the South of Ireland will support these routes strongly. In that regard, we expect a 750% increase in passenger traffic in 2022 v 2021 and to welcome over 2 million passengers once again to our terminal in 2022. We thank Ryanair for this vote of confidence in Cork Airport”.

Speaking at the announcement at Cork Airport, Eddie Wilson (CEO Ryanair DAC) said: “Following Ryanair’s announcement at Dublin Airport last month, where Ryanair launched its largest ever Summer schedule from Dublin, we’re delighted to now announce our largest ever Summer schedule from Cork, together with the news of an additional 3rd based aircraft for Summer 2022, representing a further €100m investment for Cork Airport. This is fantastic news for Cork Airport and the wider Southwest region, with Ryanair now operating over 120 weekly flights to 25 destinations this summer, with great outbound sun destinations to Spain, Portugal, and Italy, but also giving inbound tourism a much-needed boost, restoring vital connectivity and securing jobs in the wider tourism industry”.

Emirates most popular views at 40,000 feet

#TRAVELTRADETOGETHER

Tenet, Cruella, Friends: The Reunion, and live sport top the entertainment charts in the sky, and notable mention goes to The Young Offenders.

Sci-Fi action thriller Tenet and family favourite Cruella were among the most-watched movies at 40,000 feet in 2021, while Friends: The Reunion topped the TV charts, according to viewing trends released today by Emirates.l

The largest airline in the world offers more than 4,500 channels of entertainment on #ICE (Information Communication Entertainment), its multi award-winning inflight entertainment system where passengers can watch the latest movies and TV series, listen to music and podcasts, follow their flight’s progress and see views from the aircraft’s external cameras; watch live news and sport, and stay connected through Wi-Fi1.

Top movies in 2021 on ice

The most viewed movie on Emirates flights last year stars John David Washington and Robert Pattinson and features Michael Caine and Kenneth Branagh. Tenet follows a secret agent who learns to manipulate the flow of time to prevent an attack from the future that threatens to annihilate the present world.

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s action and comedy Bad Boys for Life and Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard with Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson and Salma Hayek were also among the top most-watched movies on a list that trended towards action, comedy and thriller movies.

World cinema is also very popular on ice and top picks in 2021 included French drama Who You Think I Am starring Juliette Binoche and the Oscar-winning film from Denmark Another Round.

Family favourites Cruella, Mulan, Luca and Soul

Across all cabin classes, family movies were also hugely popular and the top performing films in this genre in 2021 included Cruella, a big hit on board starring Emma Stone and Emma Thompson and Mulan, the story of a young Chinese maiden who disguises herself as a male warrior to save her father.

Animated films Luca and Soul also topped the popularity charts along with the new Wizarding World collection on ice, where adults and children alike enjoyed watching the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films.

There are more than 1,500 movies from multiple genres available in up to 45 languages for passengers in First, Business and Economy Class on ice.

The most popular TV in the sky

Emirates’ 2021 launch of TV series from HBO Max proved very popular with customers. Friends: The Reunion, which was exclusively on board Emirates in the region, was among the most watched TV programmes. Other top TV selections included the award-winning drama series, Mare of Easttown starring Kate Winslet, and The Flight Attendant, a comedy, drama, mystery and thriller all-in-one, starring Kaley Cuoco. The HBO Max content on ice continues to entertain passengers in 2022, with the addition of all three seasons of the hit series Succession

.

Notable mention must also go to The Young Offenders, the hilarious coming-of-age comedy series about lovable Cork rogues, Conor and Jock as they navigate their awkward and trouble-fuelled teenage years and is particularly enjoyed by passengers on the Dublin – Dubai route.

Unmissable live sports

For many sports fans, not being able to tune into their favourite sporting events and live games is unthinkable, but with Emirates, you never have to miss a minute of live action on the Sport 24 and Sport 24 Extra channels.

Some of the top live sporting events that customers enjoyed live on board in 2021 were the UEFA Euro 2020, the rescheduled 2020 Summer Olympics, Wimbledon 2021, The British Open, NBA finals and many more.

Emirates offers four live channels of sports and international news channels including CNN, BBC World News, Sport 24 and Sport 24 Extra.

2021 was another multi award-winning year for ice, where customers voted Emirates ‘Best Inflight Entertainment’ at the 2022 APEX Passenger Choice Awards®.  Emirates has won Skytrax World’s Best Inflight Entertainment accolade every year since 2005. Emirates continually updates its inflight content, adding hundreds of movies, TV shows, podcasts and music channels each month to its extensive entertainment library on ice.
