Autumn Flyers: Are You Protected? National survey shows 45% don’t know their rights

45% of Irish air passengers are unaware or unsure of their legal rights when flights are delayed, cancelled, or overbooked.

The IAA is launching an autumn awareness campaign to improve public understanding of EU air passenger protections.

Regulator warns that passengers may be missing out on compensation due to lack of awareness.

Millions of Irish passengers prepare to take to the skies this autumn, the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) is urging travellers to familiarise themselves with their air passenger rights in the event of flight delays, cancellations, or overbookings.

A recent survey conducted by Amárach Research on behalf of the Irish Aviation Authority reveals that while 54% of respondents claim to be aware of their rights, a significant 45% either had no idea or were unsure of the details.

The survey, which polled 1,000 adults across Ireland, found that:

  • 13% of passengers had no awareness of their rights.
  • 32% had heard something but did not know the details.
  • Awareness was higher among males (60%) and those aged 55–64.

Passengers Know What They Should Receive – But Not That It’s a Legal Right

In a follow-up question, respondents were asked what they believe airlines should provide when a flight is cancelled. Encouragingly, 66% correctly identified that passengers are entitled to a choice of re-routing or a refund, and care and assistance.

Know Your Rights – Key Points for Travellers:

  • If your flight is subject to a long delay, you may be entitled to meals, refreshments, and accommodation.
  • If your flight is cancelled, you have the right to re-routing or a refund, and in some cases, compensation.
  • In cases of overbooking, passengers may be entitled to compensation and assistance.

Clare Mulcahy, Head of Consumer Affairs at the IAA comments: “Passengers have rights for flight delays, cancellations, or overbooking, EU law provides strong protections. We want every traveller to feel confident and informed before they fly”.

The IAA is launching a renewed awareness campaign this autumn, including updated online resources and targeted social media outreach to help passengers quickly access information about their rights.

Air passengers are entitled to clear, enforceable rights under EU Regulation 261/2004. The IAA’s role is to ensure these rights are upheld and that passengers are fully informed of the protections available to them. Further information about passengers’ rights and entitlements is available on the IAA’s website at www.iaa.ie/apr
