Jacinta from Travelbiz joins the Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to Ireland, His Excellency, Andrej Droba and Mrs Daniela Drobova, to officially mark Slovakia’s 20 years in the EU. The accession of the Slovak Republic to the European Union 20 years ago is a source of great pride to this small country with a population of 5.5 million people. Known for its gorgeous landscapes and swathes of the natural mountain peaks of the western Carpathians, this landlocked country has huge cultural interest, spa resorts, wine-growing valleys, historic castles and picturesque towns and quaint villages.
The packed theatre was treated to a wonderfully lively performance of local folk music, dance and song. Dance performances by the illustrious Folk Ensembles FS Vranovcan and FS Ostroha demonstrated “Images of Slovakia” and enthralled the crowds of invited guests in Liberty Hall Theatre on Dublin’s Eden Quay on Saturday June 8th. Vibrant, rousing and colourful, the dancers whirled and shimmied, twirled and pranced whilst violins twanged their strings in beautiful harmony. The stage stomped and the audience clapped. Ladies’ costumes were thrillingly flouncy with velvet bodices and pin-pleated skirts whilst the men were ravishingly handsome in embroidered shirts, waistcoats and spurred leather boots. It was quite the spectacle!
An exhibition “Slovakia on the EU map” also featured and manifested the importance of EU membership to the country. The Slovak Republic is now truly autonomous and certainly knows how to celebrate in style.
