From Presidents to Hollywood stars: Ashford Castle’s Paddy Costello marks 50yrs
Welcoming presidents, politicians and generations of guests for 50 years Ashford Castle’s Paddy Costello marks milestone anniversary.
Ashford Castle marks a very special milestone today as Paddy Costello, a beloved figure to guests and colleagues alike, celebrates 50 years of service at the iconic five-star property. An integral part of Ashford Castle’s rich history, Paddy is a true character whose presence is as enduring as the castle itself.

Paddy Costello joined Ashford Castle as a front of house porter on 1 June 1976. Over the decades, his role has evolved into that of Lounge Ambassador, a position perfectly suited to his warm personality, deep local knowledge, and natural gift for storytelling.
At the heart of the guest experience, Paddy brings the history of the castle to life for guests, recounting stories of times gone by and offering advice and recommendations on local attractions, hidden gems, the best places for a pint, dining and so much more. His genuine interest in people and his ability to connect with guests have made him a treasured part of countless stays.

From presidents and politicians to actors and Hollywood stars, Paddy has met them all. However, looking back on his five decades at Ashford Castle, Paddy speaks most fondly of the families he has come to know across generations. Many he met as children and is now greeting again as adults and Paddy is looking forward to welcoming familiar faces, and new ones, for many more years to come.
Originally from Knocknageeha near Newport in Co. Mayo, Paddy is the second eldest of four siblings but considers the Ashford estate his second home. He speaks warmly of his colleagues and the lifelong friendships he has made over the years. Describing the Castle as ‘one big, happy family’ he says, “I’ve seen lots of changes down through the years but there’s some things that have stayed the same, such as the warm welcome for every guest and the lovely feeling you get when you walk through the doors of the castle. I’m so proud that for 50 years I’ve been part of something so special and unique.”

Niall Rochford, Managing Director of the Ashford Estate said: “As we celebrate this remarkable anniversary, Paddy’s colleagues are also celebrating a man who, for half a century, has helped shaped the great welcome for which Ashford Castle is known. The role of Lounge Ambassador is so well suited to a man whose professionalism, stories and wonderful sense of humour have delighted generations of guests and made each visit feel both unique, yet familiar. Paddy is, in every sense, part of the furniture, and all the more cherished for it.”
