TAP Customers Can Help Tackle Poverty Through Air Mile Donations

TAP Air Portugal’s frequent flyers can help build a better world by donating their air miles to three charities that support human rights, education for all children and ending poverty.

The option to donate through ‘solidarity travel’ is available to all members of TAP’s Miles&Go programme when flying to any of the airline’s 80+ destinations in the US, South America, Europe and Africa.

The charities – APOIAR, Orbis and Sol Sem Fronteiras – will each receive one million airmiles from TAP and a further one million from the airline’s generous customers. Those miles will then be exchanged for flights for organisations to deliver the vital goods and services that the charities need.

TAP has committed to supporting the charities for three years (2024-2026), after selecting them from more than 100 applications to its Donate Miles programme, a social responsibility initiative.

The Donate Miles programme is part of TAP’s Causas com Asas (Causes with Wings) initiative, set up to support charities and social entities. TAP has helped more than 60 social organisations since launching Causas com Asas in 2007.

Founded in March 1995, APOIAR aims to break the cycle of poverty for thousands of children, families and communities across Africa through development projects covering nutrition, health, education and training.

Since 2012, the charity has focused on Mozambique, where 35% of the population suffers from food and nutritional insecurity. APOIAR has helped around 15,000 people.

Orbis promotes human rights, education and equal opportunities in several Portuguese-speaking countries. Launched in 2007, it focuses on access to education, improving the quality of teaching, food security, medical assistance, vocational training, and fair trade.

From Portugal, Orbis works with teams on the ground in Africa who implement projects across Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, and São Tomé and Príncipe.

Sol Sem Fronteiras is a Lisbon-based NGO that promotes universal access to quality education for all children and young people. Over the years, the charity has created safe learning environments and promoted quality education for all children and adolescents, regardless of gender, religion, ethnicity, or economic status.

Since launching in 1984, Sol Sem Fronteiras has supported more than 100,000 children and young people. It has built and expanded 29 schools, benefiting more than 13,500 students in the education system, and improved meal and sanitation conditions for over 16,000 students. In addition, it has trained more than 1,800 teachers, providing over 2,000 hours of training.
