Jacinta Mc Glynn (Senior Reporter Travelbiz) reports: With Turkish Airlines super smooth and comfortable flights via Istanbul, we land in Ho Chi Minh City or, if you prefer to be romantic, the former Saigon. What an assault on the senses - heat, humidity, riotous colour, pure cacophony of sound, 42 million motorcycles (I kid you not and it’s like they all travel at the same time!), exotic food aromas, market smells and a G Adventure ahead of us! Vietnam, situated on the South China sea is an utterly beautiful country with a compelling history, so this intrepid troupe of travellers is set to go. With Alper Sean Hackett (Sales & Marketing Turkish Airlines) and John Grehan (Ireland Manager G Adventures) at the helm, our hardy group of adventure seekers (all the way from the Emerald Isle) is ready for action. Let’s hope South East Asia is ready for us!

We set out for the Chu Chi tunnels (approx 70 kms north of Saigon) - a serious first adventure where we creep through the forest, learn of the devastating war and experience the sheer ingenuity of the Viet Cong in their valiant attempts to keep the US army at bay. Some brave (or foolhardy!) souls were lowered into the tunnels to fully experience the sensations and strictures of these narrow underground passages. Our marvellous G Adventures guide, Thien, recounts how two ‘tunnel rats’, the name given to US soldiers who were small enough to access the tunnels, returned to Vietnam just last year to re-visit the scene. Where 100 tons of bombs fell, Cu Chi was the HQ for the guerrilla fighters. Doubtless, a harrowing memory for all involved.

Back in Ho Chi Minh City, the group has a city tour on bicycles visiting the local market (where some were dragged away from striking bargains!), Notre Dame Church and the Post Office designed by Gustav Eiffel.
