On the way back to Ireland, Declan Mescall (Features Editor Travelbiz) called in for a behind the scenes tour of Ethiopian Airways Aviation Academy in Addis.   Set up in 1956, the Aviation Academy, the largest in Africa, is a one stop training service provider for all aspects of airline operations activity including cabin crew, pilots, aircraft maintenance, ground handlers, catering  and cargo operations.   In addition the Academy also has a leadership and career development training school. As well as training all Ethiopian Airways personnel the Academy provides training services to other airlines primarily from Africa, Eastern Europe and Asia.   Thousands of overseas trainees, including pilots from 49 countries around the world have been trained there and currently the Academy trains over 1,000 aviation professionals with an annual intake capacity of 4,000.   Facilities include classroom buildings, training aircraft hanger, computer based training, flight simulators, cabin mock-ups and student accommodation for 560 trainees at a time.
